My Block and a Free Magazine

This is my block as it appears in Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks:

I named it Chained Star - you will understand why when you begin playing with multiplle blocks!

This is one of the blocks I designed to utilize 6.5" charms (unfinished size) of those great novelty and bold floral prints that are so difficult to cut into smaller pieces.  For the block above, I used leftovers from a layer cake pack that were sitting on my sewing table at the time.  It doesn't look anything like the bright colors I usually work with in Electric Quilt when I play with designs!  Below are some computer-generated blocks, in my more usual colors, that show other ways to color this block.

In the bottom two, you can see how the "star" can pretty much vanish when the color placement is changed.  They're all great designs, but I think I like the ones with the prominent star best.  Which do you like best?  Leave a comment to this question for a chance to win a free issue of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, vol. 3!  On May 7, a lucky winner will be chosen from all who reply.

I definitely like the one where the star comes forward. Congratulations on getting your block published.

I really like that block!! Oh, how I envy your creativity! I'd absolutely LOVE to win a copy of that book. I can only imagine all the great blocks in it! If I don't win, I'll just have to go out and buy it, I guess...

I forgot to mention which colorway I liked better!!! Actually, I think I like the one that went into the magazine the best. If I had to choose one of the bottom four, I think I'd choose the bottom right. I love purples and greens together, and the added gold with the print in the middle just sets it off.

Nice block! I think I like the 4th one the best, though. Looks like the corners are "folded over".

I find it amazing that the same block can have such different looks! I like the bottom left block with the yellow and blue best. But, I like all the others, too.

It really is amazing to see how much the block changes with the use of color. The block you chose for the magazine is a great one but I ,in my old age ,seem to favor the brights best. I also would love to win to see what else has been created been created by others. Thank you for sharing.

Wow it is amazing how the stars disappear on some of the blocks you have shown. I love your block and the many possibilities of the center block. Congratulations on being in the magazine and thanks for a chance to win.

I was torn between the pink/green and the purple/green.....Purple/Green/Yellow wins! Very cool to see how different fabrics react differently! WHo knew?

I think I like the bottom left best - such a visual impact! I know the star disappears, but a completely different design appears... Wow! Great design - congratulations!

I like the bottom left block, even though it doesn't show the star as prominently. Maybe it's because I love the colors!

Thank you, thank you for the great star design. Once I saw it in red I knew I have to do it. Would you tell us who made the sunbonnet designs you are embroidering that you purchased.?

I love the star dominating the design. I always go for the punch designwise.

I love the bright one with the yellow start. I love the colors and I love the bug fabric too,

I really like the blue/yellow the best. I must save up for Electric Quilt, I'm seeing so many people using it.

I love the block where the star is very obvious -- and think it would look so pretty with embroidery in the center. Congratulations on being in 100 Blocks Vol. 3!!

I like the block where the star is easily seen too. I like the idea of novelty prints in the center as well as embroidery. This would make a great kid's quilt.

This may be perfect for showing off my special Asian print that I haven't yet had the heart to cut into. Thanks for the idea and the chance to enter the drawing.

Looks like a fun block to try out. Thanks and congratulations for getting in the magazine.

I like it both with and without the star. For some reason I personally think the star looks best with the bright novelty fabrics and the florals look better with the cross instead of the star. Maybe the star reads as younger to me. Thanks for the opportunity to win a copy of the magazine.

I like your chain star and how it plays in a quilt. Thank you for showing the other options with it. I do like the star, but I like your block with the blue squares instead of the stars. I can see lots of ways to use this block.

I like the one on the bottom left -- I'm seeing a flattened package box, so I could see this done in holiday or birthday-themed fabrics with fussy cut centers of novelty fabric "gifts" waiting to be wrapped back up in the box.

O.k. a little too much of a rorschach view I suppose....

Sallie said...

I prefer the one that shows the star predominantly. Thanks for the giveaway!

Julie Kaye from KS said...

What I like about all of them is that you can truly showcase a fabric in that center square. Great job!

Great block! I like the blocks and colors where the stars disappear.

I love stars, and of course like the design better when the star pops!

I'm really leaning toward liking the two bottom blocks best. They are similar and yet so different looking and would be gorgeous in repeat.

Lyn said...

Tough choice...but if I had to pick one, it would be the bottom right one, which looks like a modified churn dash (one of my favorite blocks).

Quilting_Chris said...

My choice is the bottom left. The colors make the block look completely different. Really a lovely block with lots of possibilities.

I like the pink and green best.

I really like the blocks where the star is more noticable. What a great block to use with novelty or special fabric. Thanks for sharing.

I like the block with bright colors and a novelty print. The block designs really pop. Great block, thank you!
